The Colorado Avalanche are the National Hockey League franchise playing out of Denver, Colorado. They started life as the Quebec Nordiques but moved to the United States for the 1995-96 season (even though the Nordiques finished first in their division in the its last season in Canada, followed by a disappointing first round elimination in the Stanley Cup).
The franchise adjusted quickly to their new home, pulling a major coup by acquiring Patrick Roy from the Montreal Canadiens, which enabled them to win the 1996 Stanley Cup to bring Colorado its first national sports championship; even before the Denver Broncos won the Super Bowl. The Avs (as they're also known) brought the Stanley Cup back to the Mile High City a couple years later in 2001.
Upon restoring a hockey team with NHL, Denver was represented in all four major North American sports leagues through Denver Broncos (NFL), Colorado Rockies (MLB), and Denver Nuggets (NBA).
Due to the presence of Patrick Roy, Kay was a big fan from 1996 until Roy retired in May 2003.
