"British Bulldog," Davey Boy Smith - (born November 27, 1962, in Golborne, Lancashire, England) was a pro wrestler, best known for his work in the World Wrestling Federation where he gained attention as one-half of the British Bulldogs and later as a great sports hero in the United Kingdom. His greatest victory was beating WWF Intercontinental champion Bret Hart at SummerSlam '92 to win the title in London's Wembly Stadium.
Alongside the Dynamite Kid, Davey Boy Smith won his first WWF title at WrestleMania 2 when they defeated Greg Valentine & Brutus Beefcake. They lost the titles to the Hart Foundation and continued teaming for the next several months, but they failed to regain the titles from the Harts or Demolition. Their last televised match was at SummerSlam '88 against the Fabulous Rougeau Brothers. Dynamite left the WWF, mostly due to injury but also tired of the politics, and he turned down Vince McMahon when he tried to get the Bulldogs to come back in 1989, mostly to put of the Brain Busters.
Lucky for Davey, his wife Diana Hart-Smith copyrighted the "British Bulldog" trademark before copyrights were common in wrestling, so Davey Boy Smith was able to wrestle under his famous moniker the world over. He returned to the WWF in the singles division in late-1990, eventually winning the WWF Intercontinental title in August 1992. Shortly after dropping the championship to Shawn Michaels, he left the WWF amidst public image issues around steriods.
Davey Boy Smith competed in World Championship Wrestling for the next couple years, teaming with Sting at Bash at the Beach in July 1993, but he never made an impact in Atlanta. He returned to the WWF, sitting ringside for a steel cage match between his brothers-in-law Bret and Owen Hart. British Bulldog remained a fan favorite until August 1995 when he double-crossed Diesel to align with Jim Cornette. Owen & Bulldog teamed up often over the next couple years, holding the WWF Tag Team Championship for nine months from September 1996 until May 1997, despite their direction competition over the European Championship. That friction subsided when they joined Bret in the Hart Foundation, which lasted until the Montreal Screwjob. Davey Boy returned to WCW, where he suffered an injury in 1998. He was fired by WCW and returned to the WWF in mid-1999 (only weeks after Owen's controversial death). Bulldog competed against The Rock, Mankind, and Triple H, but he never fit in with the WWF Attitude era.
After he was released from the WWF in mid-2000, Bulldog went through several personal issues, including drug rehab and a divorce, but a couple years year, he started training to resume his career, wrestling three tag team match with his son Harry Smith (known to WWE fans as David Hart Smith) in May 2002, but unfortunately, he suffered a heart attack shortly thereafter and passed away on May 18, 2002.
