Cena debuted in the WWE on the June 27, 2002 episode of Smackdown, answering an open challenge set forth by Kurt Angle. After Angle asked Cena what quality he possessed to make him think he could beat an Olympic Gold Medalist, Cena responded with "Ruthless Aggression!" He then proceeded to lose the match. Later that night, the Undertaker gave Cena props by reminding Angle, "You almost lost to a rookie!"
Cena stumbled around the mid-card on Smackdown! for several months, until he dressed up as Vanilla Ice for Halloween. The WWE's creative staff thought Cena performed his mocking raps very well and gave him the gimmick of an Urban thug.Over the next two years year, Cena began picking up momentum, coming to the ring performing raps that cut down his opponents, often attacking their manhood or questioning their sexuality, particularly, then-WWE Champion Brock Lesnar. Cena even debuted a new finishing maneuver: The FU (now known as the Attitude Adjustment), a Fireman's Carry slam that mocked Lesnar's F-5 finisher. Although unsuccessful in his challenge for the WWE Championship in 2003, Cena defeated Big Show at WrestleMania XX to win the United States Championship. In July 2004, Cena was stripped of the title by Kurt Angle, who had become the Smackdown! General Manager. He won the title back, after besting Booker T in a Best of 5 series. He then lost the title to the debuting Carlito Caribbean Cool, who only got in one offensive maneuver. After Cena finally won the title back from Carlito, he had the belt customized to make the faceplate spin, resembling the then-trendy spinner hubcaps of the day. After nearly winning the 2005 Royal Rumble, Cena finally lost the US title to Orlando Jordan but set his sights on higher aspirations: John Bradshaw Layfield's WWE Championship. Cena earned a spot in the main event of WrestleMania 21, where he successfully pinned JBL for the championship. Just weeks after winning the title, Cena debuted a customized version of the WWE title. In June 2005, Cena was drafted to Monday Night Raw. During this time, the adult male fans (deciding that Cena wasn't worthy of the success he was receiving) began to boo the champion, a trend that built momentum over the next several months. This caused Jim Ross to describe Cena as "The most controversial WWE Champion in history."
Cena retained the WWE Championship until New Year's Revolution, where he competed in an Elimination Chamber match against Carlito, Chris Masters, Kane, Kurt Angle, and Shawn Michaels. Cena retained the title, only for Edge to appear with his Money in the Bank briefcase and Edge pinned him after two spears to become the new WWE Champion.Never one to back down, Cena challenged Edge to a rematch at the 2006 Royal Rumble, where he regained the WWE title, which (despite being booed by every single audience he competed in front of) he held through WWE No Way Out, WrestleMania 22, Backlash, and WWE Judgment Day. Rob Van Dam finally defeated Cena at ECW One Night Stand, where the fans showed in full force that they were fed up with Cena as champion, starting chants such as "You can't wrestle," "Fuck you Cena," "Same Old Shit," and holding signs such as, "If Cena Wins, We Riot."
When RVD, Edge, and Cena competed in a triple threat match for the WWE Championship, and Edge won, Cena re-ignited his feud with the Rated R Superstar. Edge cheated to retain the title at two consecutive pay-per-views, resulting in a TLC match between the two at WWE Unforgiven, which Cena won by FU-ing Edge off the top of a ladder through a multitude of tables.
In his third championship reign, John Cena became the first man since Randy Macho Man Savage to retain the title for 365 consecutive days, until he was injured by Mr. Kennedy in October 2007. A torn pectoral muscle forced Cena to sit on the sidelines for an estimated eight months, and he was immediately stripped of the WWE Championship.Cena was a surprise entrant in the 2008 Royal Rumble, winning the match by eliminating Triple H. Using the championship match he earned at the Royal Rumble early, he took on then-champion Randy Orton at No Way Out, where he won by disqualification. Cena, Orton, and Triple H competed at WrestleMania XXIV for the WWE Championship, where Cena was pinned by Orton. Cena spent that summer feuding once again with JBL. In August, Cena and Batista defeated the World Tag Team Champions Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes. However, the new champions could not get along and lost the titles back to Legacy the following week. Cena then lost to Batista at Summerslam. Cena was scheduled to compete in the Championship Scramble at Unforgiven, but a herniated disk in his spine kept him out of action until Survivor Series, when he won the World Heavyweight Championship from Chris Jericho. Cena retained the WHC at WWE Armageddon and the Royal Rumble before dropping it to Edge at No Way Out 2009.
At WrestleMania 25, Cena won the WWE Championship from Edge in a triple threat match that also involved Big Show, only to lose the title back to Edge after interference from Big Show the next month. Cena and Big Show feuded for a couple months until Night of Champions where he had another triple threat match with Randy Orton and HHH for the WWE Championship, in which Orton retained the title.
Cena finally won the WWE Championship back at WWE Breaking Point in an "I Quit" match where Orton gave up to the STF. Cena lost the title to Orton the following month, but he regained the title three weeks later. Cena lost the title to Sheamus at TLC but he regained (and then lost) the title at Elimination Chamber. He forced Batista into submission at WrestleMania XXVI to win his ninth championship. Shortly thereafter, Cena began feuding with the newly created Nexus faction, which cost him the WWE Championship and antagonized him throughout the rest of the year.
In 2011, John Cena turned over a new leaf and re-established his sights on the WWE Championship, then held by The Miz. After earning a championship match against Miz at WrestleMania XXVII, The Rock was named as guest host of WrestleMania. Cena had made some disparaging comments about Rock's commitments to the WWE Universe, and Rock made him eat those words by costing him the match. The two agreed to wrestle at WrestleMania XXVIII. Cena regained the championship on May 1, 2011, and then announced Osama bin Laden had been assassinated.
