Junkyard Dog -- (born December 13, 1952, as Sylvester Ritter, in Wadesboro, NC) was a legendary pro wrestler, best known for his work in the World Wrestling Federation as "JYD" or "Thump" (which was printed across the back of his tights as a reference to his powerslam). After gaining popularity in Stampede Wrestling in Alberta and in Mid-South Wrestling in Louisiana, Junkyard Dog entered the WWF in 1984 and he was used heavily for the next four years, winning the Wrestling Classic tournament in 1985. He feuded with the likes of the Funk Brothers, King Harley Race, Greg "The Hammer" Valentine, and "Outlaw" Ron Bass, and he frequently teamed with Tito Santana and Hulk Hogan, joining him on Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n' Wrestling cartoon series (voiced by James Avery, best known as "Uncle Phil" in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, as well as voicing Shredder and War Machine in other popular cartoons).
After leaving the WWF, Junkyard Dog entered World Championship Wrestling in 1990, where he feuded with Ric Flair over the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. JYD left WCW in 1993, and he remained active in the wrestling business until his death on June 2, 1998, appearing at Wrestlepalooza a month before his passing. Junkyard Dog was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2004.
