Rilo Kiley was an American indie rock band from Los Angeles, California. Fronted by former child actors Jenny Lewis (The Wizard) and Blake Sennett (Salute Your Shorts, Boy Meets World), the band signed with Barsuk Records for its first full-length album Take-Offs and Landings in 2001. The band moved to Saddle Creek Records and released The Execution of All Things in 2002. In 2004, it released More Adventurous on its own Brute/Beaute Records, which was distributed by Warner Bros. before the band signed directly with the major label.
Rilo Kiley started gaining increased exposure in 2004 as the band made appearances on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" and "Jimmy Kimmel Live," its third full-length album rested high on Billboard's Heatseekers Charts, and its songs were featured in several 2005 movies.
The exact origin of the band's name is unknown because the band has given playfully conflicting stories regarding the origin, but Sennett offered the following explanation in September 2007, which seemed to summarize most other accounts: "Rilo Kiley is named after a character I'd met in a dream who had predicted the date of Jenny Lewis' death."
The band is an all-time favorite of Kevin Czapiewski, who explained "Rilo Kiley was it for me in that transition period from high school to college. This was a band that I got to see kind of rise and fall, (which) was the perfect gateway that introduced me to at least half my friends in college." In his blog of the "24 Most Influential Records: 2000 - 2009", he listed two Rilo Kiley albums in his Top 10 (#6 and #2, to be exact).
Though not announced officially, inside sources state that the band has parted ways after Under the Black Light. The band members continue to pursue solo careers: Jenny Lewis has released two records, Rabbit Fur Coat with the Watson Twins and the recent Acid Tongue (she also collaborated with and appears on Elvis Costello's Momofuku); Blake Sennet and Jason Boesel make up The Elected, a band whose albums include Give Up and Sun, Sun, Sun (Boesel just released a solo record called Hustler's Son); Pierre de Reeder released a solo record, The Way it Was, in 2008.
