Ryu is, as far as anybody can tell, the greatest martial artist in the world. Trained by Gouken, along with Ken Masters, Ryu now wanders the entire world attempting to becomes the greatest fighter in history. Everything else is a distraction.
Ryu defeated the Muay Thai God Sagat in the premiere World Warrior tournament. He was then attacked by M. Bison, whom he defeated with the help of his friend, Ken. Ryu fought his master's brother, Akuma, until Akuma's island exploded.
Ryu then attended the second World Warrior tournament, which we're pretty sure he won. And then Street Fighter IV happened, but I have no idea what the hell he's doing in that game.
In the third World Warrior tournament, Ryu was defeated by Oro (SF). Because Oro was the first person to ever defeat him in a fight, Ryu decided to train under the ancient hermit.
Ryu was in the inaugural Heir to the Throne tournament. In the first round, he defeated his SNK analogue, Ryo Sakazaki. Round 2 saw Ryu defeat his SFIII co-star, Gill. In round 3, he defeated his King of Fighters analogue, Kyo Kusanagi. In round 4, Ryu was demolished by Dan Hibiki, much to nobody's surprise. Because Dan is freaking awesome.
In the live-action Street Fighter movie, Ryu's last name is given as "Hoshi." This is not official Capcom canon.
