Steve Rogers was a sickly little kid who was disgusted at what the Nazis were doing over in Germany, during the early years of the second World War. He was subjected to an experimental Super Soldier Serum, which brought him to the peak of human physical perfection; he can jump higher, run faster, swim harder, and lift more than any Gold Medal Olympian. Given a star-spangled costume, Cap fought against the Nazis in World War II before plummeting into the English Channel, where he lay in suspended animation until he was discovered by The Avengers, "about 10 years ago."
And then he fought a whole bunch of jerks and beat them up. At the conclusion of the Marvel Civil War, he was murdered. But apparently he wasn't actually KILLED, since nobody can stay dead in comics. Instead, he was hit by a ridiculous plot device, so that the Red Skull could take over Rogers' body, again.
