Survivor Series is the second oldest annual pay-per-view event in WWE (second only to WrestleMania). The inaugural Survivor Series was in Richfield, OH, in November 1987, held the same night as Starrcade. Not surprisingly, Vince McMahon allegedly told cable companies that they could not carry WrestleMania IV if they did not offer Survivor Series. The additional lure of the first Survivor Series was that it marked the first time since WrestleMania III that Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant were in the same match.

The concept of "Survivor Series" matches was that teams of five (later, four) would strive to survive in a tag match where eliminations could occur by pinfall, submission, disqualification, and count-out, and the match would continue until an entire team was eliminated. The first few years featured these matches exclusively until 1991. In the following years, events featured at least one of these elimination matches but not always as the main focus of the show.

In November 1997, the infamous Montreal Screwjob shifted the theme of the event from survival to screwjobs as the WWE Championship matches often ended with highly unusual controversies for the next several years.

On February 11, 2010, Vince McMahon participated in an investor conference call, where he announced that after 23 years, the "Survivor Series" name would not be used again. "We think that Survivor Series is obsolete, as far as that title is concerned," he said. "It was something that worked many, many years ago, in terms of a creative standpoint, various teams competing ... (Survivor Series) was one of the original four pay-per-views, but it's outlasted its usage and it is one of the things in terms of re-branding, this year and going forward, that will be re-branded. No longer will we have that title, Survivor Series." Obviously, this plan was changed, reasonably due to the limited marketability of other pay-per-view themes.

WWE released The Survivor Series Anthology on DVD on November 3, 2009.
