The Princess Bride is a bona fide cult classic! It featured an all-star cast of the likes of Billy Crystal, Fred Savage, Carey Elwes, and even Andre The Giant. It is one of the most quotable movies of all time, perhaps most notably "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." It was released into theaters in 1987, but it did not find an audience at that point, even though it tested extremely favorably (just like UHF two years later). Fortunately, the film found a large audience on VHS and through TV airplay.
The movie was based on the book The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure, which was one of the biggest "mess-with-your-head" books ever written according to Psycho Andy. Kay said it was a jumbled mess and it is the exception to the general rule that "the book is always better than the movie."
