MTV's "The State" was a sketch comedy show created by the comedy troupe of the same name for (you guessed it) MTV. The show debuted in December 1993 and it aired for three seasons before attempting to move to either ABC or CBS, although neither network reached an agreement with the group. Prior to their eponymous show, The State comedy troupe were on a short-lived show for MTV entitled "You Wrote It, You Watch It," hosted by Jon Stewart where viewer mail was read by Stewart and then re-enacted by The State.

Since the comedy troupe disbanded in 1996, members of the group have stayed busy by writing, directing, and/or acting in various movies and TV shows, most recognizably "Wet Hot American Summer," "Reno 9/11," and "Stella."

The TV show was an all-time favorite of Edward Motley during its original run, and it has since become a favorite of Andy Costello. The complete series was officially released on DVD in July 2009 after years & years of delays (the first eBay purchase Kay ever made was an unauthorized collection of The State on DVD-R with its original music, which was not retained on the official release).
