Both professional wrestling and video games enjoyed a resurrgance in popularity around the same times, especially with the advent of pay-per-view for wrestling and home consoles for video games. Since that time, wrestling and video games have been closely linked. In 1987, the WWF started licensing their brand through Acclaim. Their partnership resulted in numerous releases and their relationship lasted almost 12 years. Conversely, WCW was less fortunate finding a dedicated video game producer, but eventually, they hit the jackpot with THQ when it was tied to AKI. Unfortunately, EA Sports came calling at the height of the Monday Night Wars and lured WCW away from THQ. As a result, the WWF and THQ started a partnership as a result, so Acclaim was left with ECW, which caused the end of ECW after Acclaim could not pay its licensing fee, which ECW had already spent, so it left ECW up Bankruptcy Creek. After ECW, Acclaim produced three "Legends of Wrestling" video games, the third of which ("Showdown") caused their own bankruptcy.
